File audits
Are your case files an asset or a hidden risk?
Our independent file audits provide constructive feedback and identify hidden training needs, helping you elevate service standards, reduce risk, and confidently demonstrate your quality to insurers and clients.
Independent assessment of casework quality
We conduct an external review of your case files, providing constructive, detailed feedback on technical performance, client care, and adherence to internal procedures. You’ll get an objective measure of your service quality, a clear path to improving consistency, and a better understanding of skills gaps or training needs.

Frequently asked questions
If you don’t find the answer to your question here, get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help.
The standard approach we take is to randomise our file selection to ensure that we have an objective sample to review. However, we can narrow the selection criteria to focus on specific areas of concern, for example, files opened during a defined date range, those handled by a particular team or those pertaining to a specific area of practice. Our goal is always to provide a balanced, representative audit, but we’re happy to be guided by you in terms of scope.
We’ll define an escalation protocol for serious errors during the initial consultation phase. Usually, this will be a key contact such as your firm’s COLP or a senior partner. If we then uncover a critical issue during the audit – for example, an error that’s likely to cause serious detriment to one of your clients, or that could result in a regulatory breach, we’ll notify them within a pre-agreed timeframe. In addition to flagging the error, we’ll provide suggested remedial action wherever possible.
Our file auditing service is designed to complement rather than duplicate or replace existing internal review processes. The main benefit of an external audit with Complex Risk is the consistency, independence and systemic overview we bring to the process, which can be hard to replicate internally. And with our expert team taking on a large part of the routine auditing burden, your partners can focus their time on strategic supervision and high-level mentoring.
No, our reporting is designed to be constructive rather than simply critical. We identify and catalogue specific errors revealed during the audit, but we go beyond simply providing a list of corrections needed. Our report explains the underlying risks and provides practical recommendations for improvement, educating your internal teams and reducing the recurrence of preventable errors long-term.
Our aim is to provide actionable business intelligence with broader applications beyond simply correcting files. For example, pinpointing areas of weakness which may require additional training for individuals or teams, supporting a business case for additional recruitment or investment in new technology to improve file handling, or providing evidence to regulators or insurers on the quality of file management at your firm.
